The Einstein Tower, or Einsteinturm, is one of the most iconic landmarks of modern architecture in Potsdam. Built between 1919 and 1924 by architect Erich Mendelsohn, it was designed to house a solar observatory that could test aspects of Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. Rising from the wooded Telegrafenberg in the Albert Einstein Science Park, the tower’s fluid, sculptural form is a masterpiece of expressionist design, blending futuristic curves with functional purpose. Inside, a powerful solar telescope channels sunlight through the structure to a subterranean laboratory, where physicists studied the Sun’s spectrum and magnetic fields. Despite wartime damage and decades of weathering, the building has been carefully restored and remains in use by the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam. Today, the Einstein Tower is celebrated not only as a pioneering research facility but also as a symbol of the dialogue between science and art in the early 20th century, embodying the spirit of innovation that continues to inspire visitors.
