The Brandenburg Gate in Potsdam, not to be confused with its more famous namesake in Berlin, is a triumphal arch built between 1770 and 1771 by order of Frederick the Great. It was erected to commemorate Prussia’s victories in the Seven Years’ War and stands at the western end of Brandenburger Straße on Luisenplatz. What makes this gate unique is its dual design: the city‑facing side was created by Carl von Gontard in a restrained classical style, while the outward‑facing side by Georg Christian Unger is far more elaborate, modeled after the Arch of Constantine in Rome. This contrast reflects both civic dignity and imperial grandeur. Originally part of Potsdam’s city wall, the gate lost its defensive function when the walls were demolished in 1869, but it remained as a freestanding monument. Today, the Brandenburg Gate is one of Potsdam’s most recognizable landmarks, symbolizing both military triumph and the city’s baroque urban development, while serving as a popular meeting point for visitors and locals alike.

Nearby, visitors can explore the bustling Old Market (Alter Markt), the charming Dutch Quarter with its distinctive red-brick houses, and the vibrant shopping street Brandenburger Straße.
