The Friedenskirche, or Church of Peace, stands at the entrance to Sanssouci Park and is one of Potsdam’s most atmospheric landmarks. Commissioned by King Frederick William IV and built between 1845 and 1848, the church was inspired by early Christian basilicas in Italy, particularly San Clemente in Rome. Designed by Ludwig Persius and later completed by Friedrich August Stüler, it features a three‑aisled nave, a graceful campanile, and a tranquil courtyard with cloisters. The interior is dominated by a remarkable 13th‑century apse mosaic brought from Venice, depicting Christ enthroned among saints, which gives the church its unique aura of sacred continuity. A man‑made pond and surrounding gardens enhance its monastic character, creating a serene retreat within the grandeur of Sanssouci. The Friedenskirche also houses the tombs of Frederick William IV and his wife, Elisabeth Ludovika, making it both a place of worship and dynastic memory. Today, it remains part of the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble of Potsdam’s palaces and parks, admired for its harmony of art, faith, and landscape.

Friedenskirche (Church of Peace) is located in Marlygarten, directly by the Green Gate at the eastern entrance to Sanssouci Park in Potsdam. Set in tranquil, landscaped gardens just west of Potsdam's city center, the church is surrounded by the water of the Peace Pond and is renowned for its harmonious blend of Gothic and Italian architectural styles. Nearby landmarks include the spectacular Sanssouci Palace, the historic Kaiser Friedrich Mausoleum to the north, the terraced vineyard of Winzerberg, and the bustling Luisenplatz with shopping and cafés.
